Les nouvelles hallucinations de Lucas Cranach l’Ancien

Like Tableaux Vivants

In this show, inspired by the world of German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), figures appear as if in a tableau vivant. The characters seem haunted by the bitter memory of past lives, in an atmosphere dominated by the mystery of presence.

The original source is Les dernières hallucinations de Lucas Cranach l'Ancien (1990), a play born out of a profound event that Nicole Mossoux and Patrick Bonté experienced at the National Gallery in London when they discovered a portrait of a little girl painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder. They drew on this Renaissance fantasy, which has been performed more than 150 times across Europe.

In this re-creation, the original set and initial dramaturgy remain unchanged, but a new generation of performers and a new soundtrack have been added to celebrate their company’s 40th anniversary.

On Saturday 29 November at 5.30 pm, Nicole Mossoux and Patrick Bonté will be presenting the book they co-wrote to mark the company's 40th anniversary. Traverser les mondes / Crossing (inner) worlds bears witness to Nicole Mossoux and Patrick Bonté's many travels and their ongoing search for languages that metaphorise our relationship with others and with history.
