Olivier de Sagazan is a painter, sculptor, and performer
whose multifaceted œuvre reflects an obsession with metamorphosis and improbable figures violently ripped away from the normality
of appearances.
Transfiguration betrays the sculptor’s desire to breathe life into his creation – and his frustration at failing to do so. He enters into the clay himself, covering his body and face with it, abandoning his own identity, and, through his transforma- tions, inventing other identities – animal, hybrid, monstrous. He removes and unravels the layers of his face in an unfettered quest, part ritual, part mockery, part dance, part trance. The sense of wonder and amazement is akin to that experienced when a totally unexpected, aberrant, funny, and wild vision of ourselves is suddenly unveiled.
