(The theory of cheating)

Playing the game? What for? Because what is a game, if not the pre-determination, through the formulation of compulsory rules, of a certain number of possible moves that will allow you to win? With this definition of ‘game’, everything must be deconstructed: the win, the rules and the game itself - insofar as they are all part of the fundamental paradigm of war. An unexpected ally in this deconstruction can be found in a pirate character from the imagination of the Walt Disney Studios: Jack Sparrow. Because Jack Sparrow never plays - except when he can cheat.

Laurent de Sutter is one of the most singular exponents of contemporary thought. Author of some thirty books, which have won awards and been translated all over the world, he teaches at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and at Sciences-Po in Paris.
